ROONEY OUT FOR A MONTH

Manchester United and England have been dealt a huge blow with the news that Wayne Rooney has been ruled out for four weeks with an ankle injury.

Rooney was expected to start United's Premier League clash with Blackburn Rovers at Old Trafford on Sunday.

The in-form 22-year-old was also named in Steve McClaren's England squad for next week's friendly with Austria and the potentially decisive Euro 2008 qualifier with Croatia at Wembley five days later.

But following a training ground incident on Friday, Rooney will now miss at least three league games for United - against Blackburn this weekend, Bolton Wanderers on November 24 and Fulham on December 3.

The recently-named Barclays Premier League player of the month for October will also miss both legs of England's double-header.

"Wayne Rooney picked up an ankle injury in training and will be out for about four weeks," confirmed a club spokesperson.

Rooney had scored nine goals in his last nine games for club and country.

He had also formed a lethal partnership with Carlos Tevez, who had scored three times in his last three games for the Red Devils.

Louis Saha looks set to step up from the substitute's bench for the visit of Blackburn on Sunday.

O'SHEA TO PEN NEW DEAL

Manchester United defender John O'Shea has confirmed that he is signing a long term deal with his club.

The Ireland International is determined to spend his Entire career with Manchester United, who is also following the footsteps of team-mates Gary Neville, Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs.

In his own words he said:"I have this season and the next on my current contract, but I'm very close to signing a new deal that will keep me at United into my 30s," said the 26-year-old.

"It is something I want to do. I want to stay here, everything is good and this is where I want to be. I have never looked to go elsewhere."

He Made is debut in the Carling cup defeat against Aston Villa in October 1999 and he has since been of good use to his club with 262 appearance for Manchester United.

LEHMAN PLEADS INNOCENT

Arsenal goalkeeper Jens Lehmann has denied making a rude gesture to Germany fans during his country's Euro 2008 qualifying success over Cyprus on Saturday.

The veteran shot-stopper appeared to scratch his head with a middle finger which was construed as a gesture aimed at fans who were chanting for Hanover goalkeeper Robert Enke to come on.

"It's nonsense," Lehmann said after the match. "I've never done anything like that."

German Football Association president Theo Zwanziger added: "I will stand up for him here. He knows there's no reason to make gestures that could hurt fans. I know he respects the fans."

Meanwhile, Gunners midfielder Tomas Rosicky has returned to the Emirates Stadium after helping the Czech Republic reach the Euro 2008 finals.

He played and scored in Saturday's 3-1 triumph over Slovakia but will not feature in the midweek encounter with Cyprus.

Rosicky said after the weekend success: "In comparison to our win in Bratislava last year, the Slovaks have quite improved.

They are trying to play passing football and run a lot. I think they are an unpleasant opponent and that is why we appreciate our win more.

"At some moments we let the opponents play and they went forward with more players, which led to our chances. In the first half we outnumbered them several times, but did not capitalise on it.

"My goal came on the back of a fast-paced counter-attack. I was in the second wave and the ball found me after one of the clearances. It was going straight against my foot and I hit it with my instep well."
